Vocabulary - Personal Glossary

1. Zoomorphism

Definition- is the shaping of something in animal form or terms.

Person Definition- Draws that imagine humans as animals.

Sentence- Zoomorphism is art that imagines humans as animals. 

2. Cosmogony

Definition-is any scientific theory concerning the coming into existence (or origin) of either the cosmos (or universe), or the so-called reality of sentient beings.

Personal Definition- A scientific theory about anything to do with the reality of sentient beings.

Sentence- Cosmogony can be considered theories about the universe.

3. Oblivion

Definition- the state of being completely forgotten or unknown.

Personal Definition- The point right before your completely forgotten.

Sentence- I was completely oblivion to my country.

4. Rite

Definition-a formal or ceremonial act or procedure prescribed or customary in religious or other solemn use: rites of baptism; sacrificial rites.

Personal Definition- A procedure done for religious reasons.

Sentence- Rite is using in most church.

5. Finite

Definition- having bounds or limits; not infinite; measurable.

Personal Definition- having boundaries and limits.

Sentence- Math can have finite in some equations.


6. Dilemma

Definition- is a problem with at least two solutions or possibilities.

Personal Definition- Having so many choices that you don’t want.

Sentence- Every person will run into some type of a Dilemma in their life.

7. Fable

Definition- a short tale to teach a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as characters; apologue.

Personal Definition- a short tale story with animals or in animated characters.

Sentence- Fables usually exist in stories.

8. Foil

Definition- A foil is a type of character that usually contrasts with the protagonists.

Personal Definition- A foil is a character that usually contrasts with another character.

Sentence- In movies and in books there is always a foil character.

9. Conceit

Definition- an excessively favorable opinion of one's own ability,
importance.

Personal Definition- A thought or an idea.

Sentence- He jotted down the conceits of his idle hours.

10. Imagery

Definition- in a literary text, occurs when an author uses an object that is not really there, in order to create a comparison between one that is, usually evoking a more meaningful visual experience for the reader.

Personal Definition- When the author creates an image in the reader’s head.

Sentence- The author used really good imagery.

11. Allusions

Definition- a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication.

Personal Definition- When the human mind thinks its real when in reality it isn’t.

Sentence- When I looked into the mirror it was like an illusion.

12. Evoke

Definition- to call up or produce (memories, feelings,).

Personal Definition- To get rid of something or deny something.

Sentence- I decided to evoke some of my past memories.

13. Denotation

Definition- the explicit or direct meaning or set of meanings of a word or expression, as distinguished from the ideas or meanings associated with it or suggested by it.

Personal Definition- Denotation is like the second meaning for a word.

Sentence- “Wind” is the denotation for air in natural motion.

14. Connotation

Definition- an act or instance of connoting.

Personal Definition- What the image or whatever your looking at actually means.

Sentence- A possible connotation of “home” is “a place of warmth, comfort, and affection.

15. Abstract

Definition-thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances

Personal Definition -an abstract term or idea

Sentence-an abstract idea of picture

16. Medium
Definition-a middle state or condition; mean.

Personal Definition-something intermediate in nature or degree.

Sentence- the medium of wood engraving

17. Satire

Definition-the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

Personal Definition-a literary genre comprising such compositions.

Sentence- Swift's satire of human pettinessand bestiality

18. Metacognition

Definition- psychol  thinking about one's own mental processes

Sentence-Metacognition often takes the form of an internal dialogue

Personal Definition- knowing about knowing

19. Pathos

Definition-the quality or power in an actual life experience or in literature, music, speech, or other forms of expression, of evoking a feeling of pity or compassion.

Personal Definition-Obsolete , suffering.

Sentence-On the one hand, they produce a theatrically enthralling combination of brilliant farce and deep pathos.

20. Fallacy

Definition-a deceptive, misleading, or false notion, belief, etc.

Personal Definition-a misleading or unsound argument.

Sentence- That the world is flat was at one time a popular fallacy.

21. Multimedia

Definition-the combined use of several media, as sound and full-motion video in computer applications.

Personal Definition-of, pertaining to, or involving the use of multimedia.

Sentence-Multimedia in general for linux systems.

22. Archetypes

Definition- a universally understood symbol, term, statement, or pattern of behavior, a prototype upon which others are copied, patterned, or emulated

Personal Definition- is a universally understood symbol

Sentence-A symbol is an inevitably imperfect attempt to represent an archetype.

23. Breaking Archetypes

Definition - antonym to Archetypes

Personal Definition - Breaking Stereotypes 

Sentence-

24. Simile/ Metaphor

Definition-a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared, as in “she is like a rose.”Compare metaphor.

Personal Definition-an instance of such a figure of speech or a use of words exemplifying it.

Sentence-Metaphors are very common in everyday language

25. Synecdoche

Definition-a figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole or the whole for a part, the special for the generalor the general for the special, as in ten sail  for ten ships  or a Croesus  for a rich man.

Personal Definition-Part of something is used to refer to the whole thing

Sentence-The term "synecdoche" is a type of figure of speech.

26. Metonymy

Definition-a figure of speech that consists of the use of the name of one object or concept for that of another to which it is related, or of which it is a part, as “scepter” for “sovereignty,” or “the bottle” for “strong drink,”or “count heads (or noses)” for “count people.”

Personal Definition-  real or fictional concepts representing other concepts

27. Imaginative Fiction

Definition- based on a real world setting with magical or fantastical events.

Personal Definition- magical events in usual world

Sentence- All imaginative fiction writers take a huge leap of faith when we work

28. Science Fiction

Definition-a form of fiction that draws imaginatively on scientific knowledge and speculation in its plot, setting,theme, etc.

Personal Definition- based on futurstic or space age or advanced technology.

Sentence-Science fiction as a genre should read this book.

29. Fantasy

Definition-imagination, especially when extravagant and unrestrained.

Personal Definition- made up world with made up beings.

Sentence-David harrison via e-mail a. kenya fulfills every romantic african fantasy.

30. Irony

Definition-the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning

Personal Definition- the humorous or mildly sarcastic use of words to imply the opposite of what they normally mean

Sentence- “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
